Harut and Marut

1. Allah sent down 2 angels named Harut and Marut to the city of Babylon (in Iraq) with the knowledge of magic

- Babylon is one of the most ancient cities of all time

- Babylon was the first civilized city

2. These angels were allowed to teach anybody who wanted to study with them the “art of magic”

3. These angels came with a huge disclaimer. The angels said to anybody who came to them: “We are a test from Allah.”

- They informed the people that they were only for trial

- They were warning the people to not disobey

4. The ignorant men, even after hearing the disclaimer, wanted to learn magic

- They learned from what they could cause division between a man and his wife

- They were learning things to use it against someone

5. These men were not able to cause harm to anyone except by the Permission of Allah

- Allah is reconfirming that magic in and itself has no value except if Allah gave permission

6. They were learning something that was harming their own selves

- They were learning to harm others but Allah describes this act as they learning to harm themselves

- Ultimate harm = lose your Imaan

- Zero benefit

7. They knew they will have nothing at all of any portion in the Hearafter

8. You can literally purchase this world in the expense of the next

- Exactly what these men did

9. They sold themselves for a very evil price

- They sold themselves just for black magic

10. All magic originates at Babylon

- These men became the first magicians
