Dear Students,
Watch the videos and answer the questions below. You may have to use a dictionary and other research tools to help you answer the questions in detail.
Post your answers in the comments section below.
This assignment is due Tuesday, May 3rd by 11:59 pm.
World Map
Dig Deeper:
- Define the words: racism, white supremacy, imperialism and racism.
- Do you think that the map (one described in the video) promotes white supremacy, imperialism and racism?
- After watching the video, do you feel that schools need to change their maps?
- Watch this 3 minute clip from late 90s TV show The West Wing. What do map projections of the size of majority "black"/"brown" countries vs. "white" countries have to do with social equality?
Doll Test
Dig Deeper:
The Clark Doll test was conducted by Dr. Kenneth Clark and his wife Mamie Clark for her master's degree thesis. The test reveals the damage done by racism on children's self-perception, to the point of making them hate themselves.
- How does the media reinforce the Clark Doll test results through fashion and celebrity culture?
- How does the manufacturing industry reinforce the Clark Doll test results through dolls, toys and video games?
- How will your mother and grandmother feel if you got a strong tan or sunburn this summer? How does this affect your self-esteem and body image?
Blue eyes vs. Brown eyes
Dig Deeper:
Jane Elliott is an American former third grade schoolteacher. She is known for her "Blue eyes–Brown eyes" exercise.
1. What did you learn from the "Blue eyes-Brown eyes" exercise?
2. Why do we treat people differently? Is this fair?
3. Describe a personal incident in which you were treated unfairly because of your skin colour. How did it make you feel? What do you wish you could have said or done differently in this situation?
4. Design a social experiment you can conduct on your family and/or classmates to help reduce racism. Share the outline of your experiment.
World Map
ReplyDelete1.)- Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or attributes that specify that particular race is superior or inferior towards another race.
- White Supremacy is the belief that white people are superior of all other races, mostly black people.
- Imperialism is a policy or practice by which a country increases its power by gaining control over other areas of the world
2.) The map is showing oblivious state of White Supremacy because the it is showing that the white countries are larger than countries that consist of people within them of colour like Pakistan, India, Somalia etc. This visual effect shows to children how countries of people that are white are more important or essential than other countries. This map exhibits all three: Imperialism, racism and White Supremacy. Racism in this case would be that they are showing that white countries or that particular country that consists of many white people or the government is white is better than other countries/people. It is also indicating that white people countries are larger and more significant than others and they purposely make them larger like Greenland to show their significance from other countries.
3.) I was completely clueless about this matter and I didn't know that Green Land was actually that small. The countries within the map shouldn't be drawn larger or displayed larger because they belong to the 'whites'. They should be drawn out according to their sizes.
The Clark Doll Test shows the ill effects of stereotyping and racial segregation within the country of America. The media supports the Clark test results through celebrity culture because most celebrities or movies will show a white person good while a black portrayed as a "Bad" or "evil" Person. The manufacturing industry reinforces this test because most dolls that are always sold within stores tend to be white in colored, personally I have never seen a dark colored skin doll being sold nor have I seen a black barbie doll or princess that was black until recently. This kind of gives the effect to children that all white people are specified as "good people" and black people or dolls are discriminated as "ugly, dumb, bad" just because of their skin tone.
ReplyDelete3.) Speaking from my perspective, I am not the whitest person ever nor am I really considered dark. However, I am quite pale. If I got a strong tan, which I get quite often during the summer, my mother would hate it. My mother would tell me that my "whiteness" has left my skin etc. Personally, I would feel a little unappealing towards myself because I am use to seeing my skin colour the way it is, and now that I am a bit darker, I would feel different. So yes, it would affect my self esteem in the way that I would look much more darker than other people in my household or that I look more unattractive towards my self etc.
1.) Little kids that are ages youngest of 8-9 know how to discriminate and segregate people. These kids before didn't necessarily care what colour eyes each one of them had, but when they learned that one is better than another, their self esteem seemed to rise and they became a bit arrogant about the fact they had the "better" colored eyes. They treated the people with other colour eyes lowly and did not look up to them and the teacher even said that she a bunch of curious, amazing children turn into monsters within 15 minutes because of this. This shows that when somebody feels the tenancy of having to be a little more better than another person, they will use that to discriminate other people. Our society and our own selves tend to treat other people differently due to their skin tone or because of the outside media around us. If we are something that is considered "better or superior" then we have the idea we are better than other people which is wrong. Also sometimes media portray a certain amount of people to be wrong or something within the media happens with a person of race and that just kind of corrupts our mind making us think that the whole race is bad etc.
ReplyDeleteBack when I use to live in Ottawa, there were many white people and I was the only person with a darker skin tone than others. I always felt a bit left out since I was not as white as anybody and I wasn't apart of their groups and I couldn't be like the other people in my class. It made me sometimes feel like an outsider or sometimes a third wheeler
An expirement that could be tried is that if somebody had a belonging and a white person would "steal" it from a colored person , how would people react and if a a coloured person were to take something away fro a white man, how would people around them act?
1. Define the words: racism, white supremacy, imperialism and racism.
ReplyDeleteRacism : Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior: a programme to combat racism.
White Supremacy: The belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society.
Imperialism: A policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force: the struggle against imperialism
2. Do you think that the map (one described in the video) promotes white supremacy, imperialism and racism?
Yes it does, because it is showing that the white countries (European and American) are larger so they have more power it makes it look like the are more superior if they have a greater land mass. It shows children that white people are more important than other country. It shows racisms by it white peoples government is better than the other country. and it even shows that how white countries are have bigger areas than the other country. It show white people have more power than the other countries just because there size on the map is a lot doesn’t mean that it has more power
After watching the video, do you feel that schools need to change their maps?
I think they should not because there is not any point to change it has its own size to iit. The people who think that maps size show how big there government power is their wrong because maps just show you the size of the country it doesn’t show how your power is or how rich you are.
The word racism means to believe that every member of one type of race has the skill to do a specific action or thing. Is also to believe, and compare types of races. White supremacy is when we believe white people or the white race has authority over all other races, especially black. I think it would because at a very young age, when little children learn something it would affect them.
ReplyDeleteThe white children would begin to think they are better than the coloured students, and people. It would also decrease racism by 20%, some students will realize the injustice on the world maps and try to change that fate.
I personally think that the world maps should be changed because, of what will develop in students minds and what coloured student will think. First of all, the map is wrong, students who have test will not know the truth of south America being bigger than Greenland. 40% of this generation of students actually read the writing on the map. Other students look at the size of each country and conclude. Changing the map would benefit our society, even of it is very little.
-Imaza
They took little kids and did a test, type survey, where the child boy or girl has to choose between a coloured doll and white doll. This world is so bad to the fact that, even little kids are being affected. Many coloured kids even feel the way the society is. Even in the old fashion industry, many models were white females. Some white celebrities have more fans due to their race. Now fashion models are chose by the way the shape of your body is.
ReplyDeleteMajority of the students pointed out that the coloured doll is ugly and rude, due to having dark skin. The white doll is kind and beautiful due to being light. When the students were asked to tell which doll looks like them, many chose the dark skinned doll. That represents the insecure in the little innocent kids.
Well my family would make fun of me, not too seriously because they honestly don’t care. If I was made fun of, I wouldn’t care because whatever is in the inside count more than the outside. But if I was in someone else shoe, I would feel really bad and do dangerous treatments on my body to make me lighter.

Video 1:
ReplyDelete1. Racism: the belief that some races are inherently superior (in physical, intellectual, or cultural forms) to others and therefore have a right to dominate them.
White supremacy: the belief that the white race is superior to those of all other races, especially the blacks, and should therefore dominate society.
Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
2. Yes, I do think the map shown in the video promotes white supremacy, imperialism, and racism. This is because power is often recognized through size, and all the white countries in the map were much larger than the countries consisting of mainly colored people. So this map was made to show/seem that the white race is more superior to other countries of different races, which is a quality of white supremacy and racism. The sizes of the countries show the trait of imperialism; the power of the white countries seem of a much higher level, because they were able to gain control and ownership of such an enormous amount of land.
3. Yes, I do feel that schools need to change their maps. North America is becoming much more diverse in culture, with more and more immigrants coming in. Our country is not a melting pot anymore, but a colorful salad. If we want the immigrants and colored individuals to stay and keep our populations from decreasing, we will have to eliminate all things that show signs of white supremacy, and start becoming open minded if we want to continue in our direction towards a racist-free future. Also, if this is a school, and they are teaching others, you should teach them the truth. Our society is becoming more scientifically advanced, so we should teach them the true science of the earth and the way it is, this includes the true sizes and portions of the land on earth.

Video 2:
Delete1. The larger a country is the more noticed and respected, so the country more important. The people of that country are found to be more powerful, since they are able to keep such a large country in control and together. So the smaller countries are not seen to be as important because they are small, and usually corrupt, and are poor. So the black/brown countries are made to seem smaller so that they are less regarded by people and the white countries larger to seem more socially important, because they have more power.
Video 3:
1. In the video, the children all said that the white dolls seemed to be more attractive, smarter, good, and trustworthy. The media also seems to believe this and tries to tell us this as well. Most models all around the world are white. Even in non-white countries, the ideal body type includes having white or light skin. For example: In south Africa, the ideal man is a white man, even though only 8% of south Africa consists of white people. This is also shown in movies. In movies, the one girl or boy that everyone is attracted to is usually always a white person. The smart and good characters are also usually white. The trusting characters or the best friend is also white. The first person to die is usually a black person. In movies, majority of the actors are all white. They are usually the only ones to make the scene. In 2013, it was said that more than 85% of the leading male actors in Hollywood were white.
2. The Clark doll results also reinforce the manufacturing industry. All the sweet, pretty dolls created are usually always white; there are few colored dolls out there. Black princesses just became a thing, before they never existed. In video games as well, the main good character is white, and the bad girl part of the bad gang is always black. This leads the children playing with these dolls and games to believe that the good, sweet people are white, and the dark, evil.
3. I come from a country which is narrow-minded and blinded by Hollywood trends, ideals and fashion. So since Hollywood consists of mainly white actors, my people have been made to think that the ideal skin colour is white. So they will try as hard as they can to reach that tone of skin- the whiter, the better. And although as Muslims we are to treat equally and love every skin type, the belief that white skin is better has still rubbed off on my mother and grandmother and has been planted within their minds. I myself have quite dark skin, so I can’t really get a tan. My skin is actually darker than some of my African friends as well. But if I had light skin and did get a tan, I’m pretty sure my grandmother and mother wouldn’t be quite too happy and would force me under an umbrella till the end of summer. This would also force me into thinking that I will need white skin in order to become attractive, and can make me mentally sick as well.

Video 4:
Delete1. I learnt that people can actually become dumb and perform badly at tasks and become slower in the brain if you make them believe so. You can make people become what you want to believe of them. You can make a stereotype become true.
2. We usually treat others differently usually because they are different from us. The whites treated people of other colors differently because they are of different skin color. We also treat others differently because we might not know them as well. Example: Maycomb County treated Boo differently because they didn’t know him as well. This even applies to me. I usually don’t like a person at first because I don’t know them. I don’t think either is fair at the end because people deserved to be judged based on their actions, not their skin. It isn’t fair either to have assumptions made about them when the person making them doesn’t even know you yet.
3. Once in kindergarten, a southern-Asian girl, just like me, brought a ukulele to school for show-and-tell. Another southern-Asian girl, who had lighter skin than the both of us, came over and asked if she could hold the ukulele. The owner let her. Seeing this, I asked if I could hold it too. The girl said no, and explained that it was because I had dark skin. I was pretty confused, since the girl herself had skin the same shade as mine. Either way I was unaffected and didn’t care as a kid because I didn’t really know that she meant it as an insult, since I think it was pretty obvious I had dark skin. Honestly now, when I think about it, I just feel plain sad. We southern-Asians are so forced into thinking that having light skin is real beauty that sometimes we don’t even realize the damage it does to ourselves and our children. But if I could go back in time, I think I would’ve fist-fought the girl fair and square and make sure to tell my mom to give a good yelling at her mother for not being able to teach her child manners and reason.
4. I would take the mugshots of both colored and white people and ask others to say what kind of crimes they think the colored individual committed and what crime the white individual did. This is to see if whether or not people think that colored people are more likely to commit greater crimes than white men.

ReplyDeleteWorld Map (Video 1):
ReplyDelete1. Definitions:
Racism: Showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or believing that a particular race is superior to another.
White supremacy: The belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society.
Imperialism: A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
2. Yes, because it shows that the colored folks are all one side, and have very small pieces of land, but the white folk have huge lands, on whichever side they are on the world map. The world map was created in 1596 to help sailors to navigate the world. All the white countries are displayed larger than they should be, and the colored countries, are displayed smaller than they should be.
3. Yes, otherwise, students could be targeted by racism. If the kids grow up and have the same mentality, it is a risk. A huge risk for people to be victimized by racism, even more. They should also display all the countries, accurate to their size, instead of making them smaller or larger than they should be, just because of the colour of the people in the country.
4. The colored folks have small pieces of land, cluttered together, and they are all one side of the map, for example, India, South America, etc. It is written that South America is 9x larger than Greenland, but if you look at Greenland on the map, it looks larger than South America. They made those countries drawn larger, it could be because the white countries are more essential. Social equality isn’t there, there is more of social inequality. If there was, they wouldn’t have differentiated between the white and colored countries.
The have A LOT to do with social equality because we unconsciously equate size with importance and even power. The 3rd world countries are likely to be underestimated. The Mercator maps exaggerate the western civilizations, only because they want the Westerns to be on the top.
Delete1.Media reinforces the Clark Doll test results through fashion and celebrity culture like this: If you are a white folk, you are more like to look prettier, nicer, easy to trust. It could result as more white people as celebrities, because they seem to have a better body image, etc. If you are a colored folk, you are less likely to be a celebrity, because you might not seem as pretty. If you are a dark in colour, they’d possibly have chosen colours for you, but for a white person, just you age and weight, they’d say “All colours suit you!”
ReplyDelete2. The manufacturing industry has many ways, such as, asking the kids many questions, which are to differentiate between color and white, such as:
1. Which doll is pretty? All the kids no matter black or white, will say the white one is prettier.
2. Which is doll is ugly? All the kids no matter colored or white, will say the black one.
3. Which doll do you like better? The Asian kid pointed towards the white one, and said that it is easier to trust the white one, than the black.
In video games, they show you different skin colors, and usually, even if you are dark, or colored, you end up choosing the white, or fair colored one, because that seems more attractive and pretty to you.
3. They’d be like, “ew, look at your color” and start getting those white skin creams, and literally only because that color is not liked in society. They would feel like keeping me at home, and rather not bring me between people. It’d make any child have a lower self-esteem because nobody likes that color. It would bring a darker image to your body. I think the society would make you feel apprehensive about yourself. You’d feel self-conscious.
2. (more) As for toys, in advertisements, they show mostly white children playing with them, they think they look cute, and adorable. I, literally, have only seen colored kids, and ads like UNICEF or some NGO ad.
DeleteBlue eyes vs. Brown eyes (Video 3):
ReplyDelete1.Personally, I think, those little kids know how to discriminate. At this young age, they know the difference between colored and white, they know that they aren’t or the society could not adapt if they like the brown-eyed kids. At the end, they were taught that the color of anybody’s eyes’ does not relate to how you should treat them. The same way, the color of anyone’s skin should not relate to how you should treat them. You should not judge anyone by their colour. It does not make any difference if their skin is black or white. Treat everyone with equality. Color is not what makes people good or bad.
2. Yes, we do end up treating people differently, like mentioned the video, in the beginning: the teacher said that blue-eyed kids are smarter than brown-eyed kids, but then later on, she says that the brown-eyed kids are way smarter than the blue-eyed kids. The color does not matter, it’s the kid’s IQ level, not if he/she is black or white, or blue-eyed or brown-eyed. This is not fair, because a colored kid could be smarter than a white kid, but because of his/her color, they’d be underestimated. Racism is the opposite of justice, it is a trait of injustice.
3. I’d say maybe when those family friends taunt you because you’re brown, or just simply darker than their own kids. They’d just call you brown, and that you have no moral values. Sometimes, it also, that this specific color of clothing won’t suit you because you are brown, but if you were white, it would’ve looked better. I think it, somewhat, drops your level of self-esteem because then, you stop wearing that color, or socializing, because you think you’d probably get criticized, which slowly makes you feel like you are ugly. I think I would’ve just told them to not say that to anyone else, because it hurts a person’s feelings after they are criticized, and to not pass racist comments, because it isn’t going to get them anywhere. They’d probably just be more sinful.
4. You could possibly show them videos on how badly a victim, victimized by a racist person feels, or the extents of racism, or I’d say tell them about the depth of the victimization of racism is. I could call a victim of racism, and possibly show my class, how hurtful it could be. The person I call could tell us, and because it is a true story, it would make them, sense that feeling, and make them realize that racism could be far, far, more than they think. That could help them, spread it out more, which will lead to, obviously, reduction of racism in my class, but also, racism in the societies where they belong.
World map:-
ReplyDelete1) white supermacy-the belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society.
Imperialism-a policy of extending a countrys power and influence theough diplomacy or military force.
Racism-the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that a persons social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics.
2) i think that the map promotes imperialism because it is extending a countrys power and influence throgh diplomacy or military force.
3) yea, i feel like the school needs to change its maps because it is not fair to coloured people or people of other races to be treated like this.
4)
Doll test:-
ReplyDelete1) i think that the media reinforces the clark doll test through fashion and celebrity culture by making the blond, white and blue eyed girl always in the front of a fashion magizine, or sometimes in a movie or show, they would show the light skinned girl the popular girl bullying the darker girl. Sometimes they will even show that a light skinned person is known as the good guy while the darker skinned is known as the bad guys, who deal with drugs and steal expensivr cars.
2) the manufactoring industry reinforces the doll test results by sometime making the whiye doll come with a fancy car and nice clothes while the darker doll come with nothing and is very cheap. I have never seen a dark coloured doll but if there was, thats probably how it would be. In video games, they often show the white doll wearing wxposing clothing while the darker one is modestly dressed.
3) i dont think that my mother or grandmother would really car if i was tanned or sunburned because my grandmother, dad, and some of my siblings are tanned, but one time when i came back from jordan, i got sunburned, and my mother started to call me black...lol.
Video 3:-
ReplyDelete1) i learnt that no matter what skin colour someone is or what race they are from, you shouldnt judge them because you dont know how there life is like or what they have been through.
2) i think that people treAt peolpe like this because they think that they are better than they are because the are lighter skinned, or they have better clothes, etc.
I dont think that this is fair though, because man are created to be treated equally.
3)well i havent really been bullied about my skin colour before, but i have been bullied about my race because i am a muslim and inwear hijab.
I went to the park onetime, and there were these people making fun of us because we were wearing the hijab. I wish i could just go up to them one day and explain to them what islam is and why we were the hijab.
4)
World map
ReplyDelete1) Racism: Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior
White supremacy: The belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society.
Imperialism: A policy of extending a country’s power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means.
2) Yes, I do believe the video promotes all three of the terms. This is because the colored countries are being shown smaller in size than they actually are while the Caucasian countries are expanded in size than they actually are. This is symbolizing white supremacy because it is trying to show that Caucasians are dominating the world and are higher in status by expanding the continent and making it larger showing that Caucasians are larger in number and are common people while colored people are less in number and are not common people.
3) Yes, I do believe schools should change their maps. School is where children attend to learn knowledge and become aware of what is in the real world. Teachers should be teaching them what is real and not an edited map. The children are going to grow up believing that’s how the sizes of the continents are actually are because that’s what they’ve been taught their whole life. They’re going to believe every Caucasian country expanded because of imperialism. They’re going to grow up as racist children believing that Caucasians dominate most of the world so their race is superior over any other race.
4) The size of the countries represent their status in society. For example, the colored countries are small in size, this represents how in society they are very small and don’t have much say in what happens in society and that they are the outcasts. While the Caucasian countries are large symbolizing their high status in society showing that they dominate everything and they are the ones who get a say in what happens and they make the decisions for colored countries.
Doll test
ReplyDelete1) The media reinforces the Clark Doll test results through fashion and celebrity culture by using Caucasians in their magazines, movies, posters, and as models. In expensive stores, you would see Caucasians modeling nice, posh clothes, while African Americans are used to showcase thug/gangster type of clothing which to some are considered low class clothing. In the fashion world, if you are dressed nice and are an African American, the clothes must be stolen. The stereotype of how African Americans steal and are poor is a terrible constant thought in the heads of most.
2) The manufacturing industry reinforces the Clark Doll test results through dolls, toys and video games by making the nice, pretty, expensive items white skinned or including white skinned characters. Often when a child enters a toy store, and has to choose between a dark skinned or light skinned doll, they often reach for the white skinned doll. This is because manufactures make the white skinned doll prettier and more attractive and friendly looking while not putting much effort into the dark skinned doll.
3) I think my mother would laugh at me for forgetting to apply sunscreen on and inform me on the disadvantages of sun exposure. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind and would love me just the same. I would feel just the same and wouldn’t pay much attention to it, besides I really like natural tans, not because of the change of color, but because how cool it is so I’ve always wanted one.
Blue eyes vs brown eyes
ReplyDelete1) I learned that it makes no difference whether a person’s skin is red, yellow, white, black, or pink, they should be judged and treated based on their ethics and their character. Having different features doesn’t make anybody less human than the other, everybody was created differently by Allah swt, and no two people are the same. So there is no possible chance that someone is worth more than another person because nobody is the same. I also learned children can be easily shaped to their surroundings. The teacher told them one day that people with blue eyes are better than brown-eyed people, and that they are smarter and deserve more rights. All the children believed it because that’s what they were taught, and the same happened when situation was switched. This shows that nobody is born racist or a discriminator, rather they are shaped into one as their surroundings affect them as they grow older. Adults should be a role model to children and keep racist thoughts out of the children’s brains
2) We treat people differently because most people believe in stereotypes. Every black person must be a drug dealer, every white person is mentally ill, and every Muslim is a terrorist. Society tells you how each person should be treated and most of the time people believe it. We treat people differently is because they are different than us. Whether it may be someone’s religion, race, morals, or features. Because they are not like it, we criticize others for what were not. We believe that the person I am is the only correct type of person there should be in this world and everyone else is wrong. No, this is not fair in any way possible. We should get rid of stereotypes and get to know someone’s character and not at their physical appearance.
3) I have not been in a personal incident in which I was treated unfairly because of my skin color.
4) My experiment would include two homeless men. One which would be light skin and one would be dark skin. I would offer change to the individual I’m conducting the experiment on and they have to choose between the two which one they would give the change to, and cannot be given to both. At the end, I will show how living conditions for the dark skin man are much worse than the light skin because no one wants to help the dark skin because they think he’ll spend it on drugs, a common stereotype.
WORLD MAP
ReplyDelete1. RACISM: The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. WHITE SUPREMACY: The belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society. IMPERIALISM: A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
2. I believe that the map, indeed, does promotes white supremacy, imperialism, and racism. All of these terms are present on the map. The most impermanent fact the Jane Elliot pointed out was that, the countries that are taken over by white was much bigger than the others. This shows that white is much superior to any other race, and therefore should be the dominant race. One thing that had caught my eye while watching the video, was that North America itself took over half of the map, and once jane Elliot moved the other half to the other side, it showed the rest of the world on the other half.
3. Yes, I feel that they should change the map, because children are constantly learning from these maps. Through the course of there life, they would be looking at this map and only assume that the white countries are always, and had always been the superior country. This will affect them later in their life when they visit new countries and see new places, for they will wonder why it is different. They will always believe that the white are the dominate race, and always greater than the rest. This will affect not only the white race, but the color race will feel discriminated. If this map is used, then people are teaching the kids a lie and will keep on teaching them all a lie, as the years go by. That the white race is always the superior one.
4. The size matters. The countries that are ‘white’ have a much bigger size than the other ones. Bigger size shows and implies power, superiority and importance. All words that shows that the white race is better and will always been better. While the other countries or, the third world countries are smaller and are more likely to be valued less and therefore are much smaller. These maps show importance and exaggeration to the western civilization rater then the eastern side. This does not show equality in any way. Changing the earth’s landforms, to show which race is superior, is obscene and not equal.
DOLL TEST
ReplyDelete1. It is said, that if you are light skinned you are much prettier. This idea of being ‘light skinned makes you prettier’, has been constantly shown and reinforced through the media, to the point where people question why they are what they are. Many advertisements show that if you use a particular product you will become light skinned and more “prettier”. In the media it shows how being dark skinned is not as great as being white. They shows kids from such a young age that being dark, or brown skinned is not pretty, compared to the white skinned people showed on television or the magazines. The different makeups that are coming new, such as contour or other stuff, are used in such a way to make your skin lighter. When kids look at themselves in the mirror they wish they looked like the girls or boys in television now, if the media keeps on saying, to be light skinned it prettier, that is what the kids will think growing up; being dark skinned it ugly.
2. Much of the doll that are being sold today is white. This shows to kids, that to be the perfect is to be like Barbie, and Barbie is white. When teaching something to a child, they will remember it for the rest of their life, it is part of growing up. Now, teaching kids that being light skinned is prettier, they will only assume that. In the eyes of little girls, Barbie would be there role model, they would want to be exactly like them and would want their appearance to like Barbie. Now, Barbie has blonde hair with blue eyes, and white skin color. To kids with dark skin colors, they know they will never be like that, and will question why they are what they are. This is very dangerous because, kids will go to many extents to be different just because their doll or their game or toys are like that.
3. My mother and grandmother would never have a foul reaction towards my skin color being changed. They would never say anything that will bring my self-esteem down, or say anything to question why I have done what I have done. In fact, I think they will be supportive in any way they can. They also wouldn’t question why I did it. But I don’t think I would be affected in any way, or it won’t bring my self-esteem down
BULE EYED – BROWN EYED
ReplyDelete1. People assume that everything that there are told is always right. From this short clip I learned how in a course of two days, a small class of third graders, turned into nasty, vicious, discriminating students. In the first part of the experiment, their teacher told them that the blue eyes were much more superior. Now, having been told this they changed their thinking process to which, they thought they were better than the brown eyed. The same went the next day, except the roles had been switched. This also changed the way they thought, on both days the inferior students which were the ones that wore the blue collar, performed poorly on the activity they played. In contrast, to the superior students, who performed quite well. This shows how easily they can react to discriminatory behavior. It amazes me how, a person can easily act differently towards his friends because, he felt superior to them for more than merely 15 minutes. At the end, the teacher confronted them and told them about the experiment she conducted. They all now know what racism felt like.
2. Every race, culture, and ethnicity has its own stereotype. And because of ‘stereotypes’ we are constantly fed the thought of treating one specific person a specific way. So, the question asked here, is why do we treat people differently? A simple answer would be, that’s how it is, and that’s how the world works. A Chinese man will always be portrayed as smart, a Muslim hijab woman is always oppressed, and blonde is always going to be dumb. These are some of the many stereotype in our society. People who are not like us, or have the same attitude, living or act the same way we do, we tend to see them as different. We tend to treat them differently. We give them a serotype. They don’t see eye to eye with us, they must be abnormal, they must have something different about them, which we then show to society as stereotypes. Once given a stereotype that is how we will treat that kind of people always, no matter how different they are from the stereotype. Now the bigger question asked here is, ‘is it fair?’ at any given circumstance if you ask someone, is it right to treat people different because of their race of culture, they will automatically say ‘no’. But, when it comes to taking acton, they wouldn’t do anything about it. No it’s not fair, to judge or treat people differently because they are not like you. Just because they don’t fit the personally or appearance to our needs, we will treat them differently
3. I Alhamdulillah have never had an incident that involved me being treated unfairly because of my skin color.
4. In my experiment I will show many scenarios in which people have to guess a crime that is committed, and if it’s done by a white man or a colored man. In these scenarios it will show a crime being committed, and in many aspects of that scenario people will assume a colored man had done it, but in reality it was a white man. This shows that you shouldn’t automatically judge who it is, but look at the details of the crime and don’t have a narrow mind while answering the question. For this experiment I won’t only being showing people that the colored man is always innocent, but also showing even a white man, because people need to understand the scenario before saying who it is.

ReplyDeleteBLUE EYES BROWN EYES:
1. I learnt many things from the "Blue eyes-Brown eyes" exercise. The exercise provides an examination of the realities of discrimination as experienced by actual students in the classroom of third grade teacher, Jane Elliott. I learnt how quickly children can succumb to discriminatory behaviour. In the beginning of the class, both the blue and brown eye students behaviour was the same towards each other, but when the teacher gave one group of students a higher advantage then the other, the results were stunning. By the end of the day, the blue-eyed children viciously put down the brown-eyed children. Not only that, but the quiet, struggling blue-eyed students did much better on class assignments, and the louder, successful brown-eyed students did not do as well. The next day, Elliott reversed the exercise, promoting brown eyes as better than blue eyes. Much of the same results happened, though the brown-eyed students didn't taunt their blue-eyed classmates quite as viciously. When the exercise ended, the children hugged and cried together. The class had experienced what racism felt like.
2. We live in a world where one’s race, religion, the colour of ones skin, the way one dress, and the way one speak overpowers personality and who we really are. I believe that the main reason why people treat others differently has a lot to do with steroeotypes. You see a homeless person, and think, they must have made bad choices, and wrong decisions. You see a supermodel, and think, how fortunate. Getting paid for looking beautiful. You see the school jock, and think, great athlete, most popular guy in school. You see the loner, and think, how sad. They have no friends. We live in a culture where people are so often treated with distain and disrespect. We are attacked for being of a different race or colour, women and children are abused, we turn away from helping a stranger for fear of those around us, and huge numbers are starving and homeless.People are filled with biases. I believe it is not fair at all, to treat others different. In the world that we live in today, we tend to care too much about what people think of us. It’s all about what you look like, what clothes you wear, how your voice sounds. We never stop to think about it. People just see the outside, what they don't see is that, that is just a cover. Peel back the cover and you will find a person. A human being just like everyone else, yet different in their own way. The way one dresses should not at all determined the way one is treated. Everyone should be treated equally, and no one should be seen as better then another because of the way they look.
3. Alhumdulilah, I have not had any experiences of this sort.
4. An experiment I could conduct is to show a picture of a black man, and a white man. Both men intended on going on a flight to another country. Both of these men, got stopped for a certain reason, and it has been said that one of these men have assaulted a women, and therefore both need to be questioned, and cannot board the plane until the suspect has been identified. Finally, they have to explain who they believe actually committed the crime, they also have to explain the mens’ thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and why. I could give a number of situations, talking about a black and white man, as mentioned above.

Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that a person's social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics.White Supremacy- he belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society.Imperialism- a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
2. Yes, I do believe it does promote white supremacy, imperialism and racism. In terms of supremacy, the first world countries are made bigger because of the fact that they are white. This makes it seem as if these countries are more important the the others. The Mercator Projection was intended to foster or reinforce imperialism or white supremacy. It makes the areas of the world where Europeans live look larger than their actual size. Despite the popularity of this kind of world map, it's only one of many possible ways of depicting the earth, its lands, and its various people. More importantly, in terms of accuracy and social, politcal equity, it's also a bad way of depicting the earth, and of imagining it, because it reflects and encourages Eurocentric, "white" notions of superiority and centrality.
3. Yes, I do believe so. If the map doesn't change, students will continue to learn in a way which is racist, and they will start to see how the white countries are larger then they should be and the countries with people of colour are much smaller. These kids will also feel more superior,if they are white, and the kids of colour will start to feel discriminated because of the fact that they are smaller then they should be. This will be a visual image that teaches children a lie. When the map is put into the way it should be it shows the truth about the actual importance of different countries. The different teaching aids make us racist. By putting out the map in the way it should be, it makes us more of telling the truth. Many people will start to see if the size is larger, then this means that they have more power, and are more superior. If we continue to use this map, we will be teaching kids a lie, and in a way, implying that third world countries are not important.
4. Size determines importance and power. The Peters Map of the World (1974) shows the earth's geographic relationships better than the standard Mercator map (1569), which is what we all likely grew up with. In this map, land masses and nations are shown in true proportion. A more accurate representation of land mass is the Peters Projection Map. Peters pointed out that the Mercator map has a distortion in the northern hemisphere, making North American and Eurasian countries appear much larger than they actually are. For example, Greenland and Africa are shown as roughly the same size, although in reality Africa is about fourteen times larger. In contrast, the regions along the equator; Africa, India, and South America, to name a few, appear smaller, especially when seen next to the distorted northern half of the map. It was Peters' belief that this error led many in the developed world to ignore the struggles of the larger, poorer nations near the equator. Most third world countries were made to appear smaller, then they should be, and first world countries were made much bigger then they should have been as well. As a result, the map makes some countries smaller, because they are said to have less power and be less important. cause Peters' map more fairly displayed third world countries than the "popular" Mercator projection map, which distorts and dramatically enlarges the size of Eurasian and North American countries.

Doll Tests:
Societies definition of “beautiful” is a white person. And the idea of “black people,” is said to be the bad guy, or the not so pleasant person. In fact, the Clark Doll test also proves this, as a matter of fact. The clerk Doll test was an experiment done by Dr Kenneth Clark and his wife Mamie where they asked black children to choose between a black doll and a white doll. The dolls were the same except for their skin colour but most thought the white doll was nicer. Most of the kids did believe this, because of the fact that white dolls was portrayed in the media as a good guy, the pretty doll. On the commercials that were seen, white dolls were used. When models were thought of, white dolls wee used. Everything that was used, and put on display was was always said to be white. So the thing that stuck in the kids head while they were doing the doll test, was the white dolls and the labels that were stuck to them were, pretty, nice, good guys, because of what the media stuck in their head.
2. As mentioned previously, white dolls were said to be “pretty” and the “good guy” so most kids would want the white doll, or play with the white doll rather then a black doll. If you were to take a kid to the store, and they had an option to choose between either dolls ( white or black ) most kids would prefer to choose the white doll, just because of the way media portrays the doll. Since many companies and industries would start to see the high market in these white dolls, they would feel a need to rather manufacture white dolls, and forget about the black dolls, because many of these companies rather prefer profit. As a result, many manufactures would produce more white dolls, then black dolls, and kids will continue to buy the white dolls.
3. Personally, I feel like my Mother and Grandmother would not be too bothered by the fact that my skin colour has changed. I feel like my parents would rather tell me I got a tan, but they would not say such a thing that would make me feel hurt. I feel like my parent would rather tell me to stay away from the sun, but they would not say anything rude or unpleasant. Similarly, I do not think I would be affected at all. Rather, I myself would want to stay away from the sun, but I don't think it wOULD affect my self-esteem or the way I think about myself.

Define the words: racism, white supremacy, imperialism and racism.
Racism is the stereotypical belief that one particular race is looked down upon another. A person social and moral traits are comparable to one's inborn characteristics. Racism can be used to classify humans into groups, each with characteristics different considered inequality in society.
White supremacy is the theory that white people are superior to all other race in authority, power, human right therefore dominates society.
Imperialism is to increase power and influence of a country with force through diplomacy or military.
Do you think that the map (one described in the video) promotes white supremacy, imperialism and racism?
Yes, the map is promoting white supremacy, imperialism and racism because the white countries are shown larger than black countries. Small countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka that have within them of colored people. The small countries are grouped together indicating we have big land. We are placed in a particular corner in compared to white people who have huge land. They are anywhere they wish on the world map.
After watching the video, do you feel that schools need to change their maps?
I personally think that the world maps should not be changed because, history would not change nor will the people. Changing the all the world map will not benefit us as human but just give us more confusing and a chance to blame whoever actually made the current map. Creaing the map will only cause more pollution and the trees will be cut down.
Watch this 3 minute clip from late 90s TV show The West Wing. What do map projections of the size of majority "black"/"brown" countries vs. "white" countries have to do with social equality?
The map projection of the size of majority "black"/"brown" countries vs. "white" countries is that colored people have small pieces of land, with a lot of people cluttered together, and is on one side of the world. Even through times changed from the past, there are many people who follow olden times. Countries drawn larger, have higher authority, power, right and wealth. This video shows that their isn't social equality here. This video shows the difference between the white and colored countries.

ReplyDeleteHow does the media reinforce the Clark Doll test results through fashion and celebrity culture?
Media reinforces the Clark Doll test results through fashion and celebrity culture through magazines, movies, posters, broadcasts and books. The media indicates the stereotype that white folks are heartwarming, caring and trustable. The are rich, figure of a model, and always wearing branded clothes. The stereotype that the media created for African Americans are that they are orphans, poor and grow up to be thugs or gangsters. They are not rich enough to be wearing branded clothes.
How does the manufacturing industry reinforce the Clark Doll test results through dolls, toys and video games?
The manufacturing industry reinforces the Clark Doll test results through dolls, toys and video games by making different skin colors appeal to you. Manufacturers make the white skinned products more attractive to get and keep our attention.
How will your mother and grandmother feel if you got a strong tan or sunburn this summer? How does this affect your self-esteem and body image?
My mom and grandmother will laugh at me for getting a strong tan or sunburn this summer. They will comment on the fact that I got darker. This truly doesn't affect me nor my body image because I know that I am not dark even with a tan because I know people who are dark as the chocolate in a chocolate chip cookie.
WORLD MAP
ReplyDelete1) Racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.
White Supremacy: the belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society.
Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
2) In my opinion this video is clearly promoting racism, white supremacy, and imperialism. As we watch this video we could notice how they are differentiating between black and white people with the size of the countries, this is not only discriminating black people based on their beliefs, but they are also trying to show how white people are more superior (imperialism) and should have a bigger part on the map then black people. This would make sense if it was true, but the maps are wrong and are sized according to the people’s race rather than the actual size.
3) In my opinion schools should change their maps, because if we are taught at school about how racism and discrimination is bad and we should prevent ourselves from developing an act like this, than they should also show us how even the maps portray this type of act and we should understand how this is wrong and some people are not given the freedom or status they deserve. If schools did change their maps I feel like it would bring a whole new chapter of discoveries for students and it would give them a deeper look and understanding of racism. I also feel like schools are discriminating against black people if they do not change their maps because it is a form of showing superiority to some places and not others, which is wrong and in accurate.
4) Social equality means to have equality or the same status between a group of people or society in forms of freedom of speech, certain respects, property rights and equal access to social goods and services. The map projections of the size of majority "black"/"brown" countries vs. "white" countries shows the opposite of social equality due to the differentiating sizes of the countries. These map projections have a lot to do with social equality. This video states that some societies unconsciously acquaint size with importance and even power. If the map shows inaccurate sizes of the countries, people will develop an understanding of some countries being more superior and powerful rather than the other countries, which are actually bigger in real life, according to the map sizes and going on further to their race.
DOLL TEST
ReplyDelete1) The media reinforces the Clark Doll test results through fashion and celebrity culture by portraying white people as pretty, beautiful, and good people while showing the opposite of black people. When we watch movies or shows we usually notice a white person acting as the little innocent girl or the good guy while a black person is portrayed as the bad person and a bully. As media is portraying these stereotypes people are forced to think that white people are better, which sometimes leads to hatred of their own race. We could also use Disney as an example. We see Cinderella, Ariel, Snow white, sleeping beauty, Rapunzel and much more Disney characters shown in a bright, white skin tone, while there is some characters such as Pocahontas and Tiana, which are a dark skin tone (majority of the characters are white).
2) The manufacturing industry strongly reinforces the results of this experiment by the things they are selling to the society. When we go to the store we barely see any dark skinned dolls or Barbie’s or any human like toys. We often see white dolls displayed in such a cute way, which attracts our eye and makes us believe that white is better than black. This is showing us how manufacturing industries is displaying racism in such a way that makes kids adapt racism, and start to dislike dark skinned people or toys.
3) I think if I got a tan or a sunburn this summer my mother and grandmother would judge me and give negative comments and try to help me get rid of it. I feel like the differentiating between light and dark skinned people is portrayed in such a way that people think that the only way to look beautiful is to be light skinned. This would probably make me look back at myself and try to shape myself out in accordance with the society and family. This would make me look at myself with less confidence, I would try to hide myself under this new look, due to my surrounding, and how they would make me change my mind.
BLUE EYES VS. BROWN EYES
ReplyDelete1) From this experiment I have learned that sometimes we don’t realize the way people feel when they have restrictions, or they are not given the freedom they deserve, and how we judge people by their cover and assume stuff about them, without knowing who they really are. For example these students had no idea how they were discriminating against black or Indian people until they went through this experiment and learned how people are judged by their cover and are treated differently because of their race or nationality.
2) In my opinion we treat people differently because of our surroundings and media. I feel like we adapt the stereotypes through watching television, movies and the way everybody looks and talks about a particular person. For example if we see a black guy waling by, I could imagine my friend saying “Oh my god that was so scary, he looks so scary”. It has become a bad habit that every person has either a lot or a bit of. It is becoming more and more common to talk about people and assuming things about them, without even getting to know them through the bad influences we have adapted through media and our surroundings.
3) I do not clearly remember any incident that has occurred to me about my race, but I do somewhat remember an incident that happened to me about where I was from. I and my cousins went to the park and I wasn’t sure what exactly happened, but I remember some people calling us pakis, in a negative way. I really wish I could have answered them and defended myself and my home country. I onviously did not feel good at that moment but I was small so it didn’t really realize what had happened but I knew something against us happened.
4) MY EXPERIMENT:
I would tell my classmates or family to wear a black mask for a week.
I would want them to wear the mask when they go out to the mall, to school, at home, to family parties and anywhere and everywhere else.
I would want them to notice how people would look at them and if they feel like people looked at them in a negative way or looked at them the same way they would without the mask. The point of my experiment would be to make my classmates/family feel how the dark skinned people feel when we give them a negative look or comment, which after a week would help us realize that when we do these negative acts we are making those people feel bad and disliked. This experiment would put us in their {dark skinned people} shoes for a week.

ReplyDelete1.Define the words: racism, white supremacy, imperialism and racism.
Racism- Is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that a person's social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics. White Supremacy- The belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society. Imperialism- A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
2. Do you think that the map (one described in the video) promotes white supremacy, imperialism and racism?
Yes, I do think this map shown in the video promotes white supremacy, imperialism, and racism. I think this because coloured countries are being portrayed as small land mass countries than what they actually are. Power is often recognized through the size of a country, and in this map, all white countries are much larger than the countries that are at different colour. By looking at this map, you can tell that white race countries have more superior over other countries of different races because of their greater land mass.
3. After watching the video, do you feel that schools need to change their maps?
Yes, I feel that they should change the maps because students at school are learning from these exact same maps in school every day. When students look at this map, they will only assume that the white countries are always large in mass and are more superior than the other countries of different races. If a student visits one of the white countries on the map, he/she will realize that the map was actually false and that the white countries are not that superior over other countries. White students will feel more superior since their countries are portrayed in a larger image, and the students of colour will then begin to feel discriminated because their countries are portrayed smaller than they actually should be.
1. What did you learn from the "Blue eyes-Brown eyes" exercise?
ReplyDeleteLittle kids know how to discriminate other people, but I learned that it no difference of a person’s skin, no one has the right be judged and treated based on their biological and inborn character. Everyone is human with different characteristics.
2. Why do we treat people differently? Is this fair?
We treat people differently because of what we learn from different people. We could be thought that every black person is a raper, and must stay away from me. White person have a higher authority, all Asians are smart and Muslim is a terrorist. Society labeled every person in a community telling you how each person should be treated.
3. Describe a personal incident in which you were treated unfairly because of your skin color. How did it make you feel? What do you wish you could have said or done differently in this situation?
I don't have any personal incident where I have been treated unfair because of my skin color.
4. Design a social experiment you can conduct on your family and/or classmates to help reduce racism. Share the outline of your experiment.
I could go to my younger cousin and do an experiment on them. I will play a game of tag giving them a set of rules that changes based on racism. Ex, the person who is it can`t touch someone with black skin? In the end, I will explain the purpose of the game teaching them that racism is not fun because you can't play with everyone even through you are friends.

Ans: • Racism- the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
• White supremacy- the belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society.
• imperialism and racism- a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force is imperialism
2) Do you think that the map (one described in the video) promotes white supremacy, imperialism and racism?
Ans: yes it does, the government and the teachers are teaching the kids a different version of seeing the map even though they know that they are not in the correct proportion. Even after that they are not taking any action to change it
3) After watching the video, do you feel that schools need to change their maps?
Ans: yes I do, and I feel like children should be notified of the real truth otherwise they may seem racist to others without evem knowing it.
4)Watch this 3 minute clip from late 90s TV show The West Wing. What do map projections of the size of majority "black"/"brown" countries vs. "white" countries have to do with social equality?
Ans: it just shows that black people are smaller in society and that white people are more honored. The map shows that Africa is tiny however it says that Africa is nine times bigger than Greenland. Yet on the map Greenland is bigger and it isn’t even a continent

ReplyDelete1. Define the words: racism, white supremacy, imperialism and racism.
Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics specific to that race, especially so to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. White supremacy is the belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society. Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy.
2. Do you think that the map (one described in the video) promotes white supremacy, imperialism and racism?
Yes, I do think that this map promotes white supremacy because as shown in the video all the white countries are larger than they should be and all the other coloured countries are smaller. It shows racism too because all the coloured races are small in size and the whites just feel superior.
3. After watching the video, do you feel that schools need to change their maps?
Yes, I do think that they need to change their maps in order for children not to get the idea of racism and so that they don’t feel that they are below than others. Also so that the children ideally don’t have a misconception in their minds about race superiority especially if coloured then having misconceptions of white superiority will make them feel down.
4. Watch this 3 minute clip from late 90s TV show The West Wing. What do map projections of the size of majority "black"/"brown" countries vs. "white" countries have to do with social equality?
Social equality is a state of affairs in which all people within a specific society have the same status in certain respects, often including civil rights, freedom of speech, property rights, and equal access to social goods and services. When looking at the map projections according to size do not promote social equality. It shows that the coloured countries are being segregated into smaller countries even though they are bigger than they appear. It shows that they are not given the property rights that they deserve. It doesn’t give equal rights in terms of both white and black countries. The white countries are bigger than they should be and this is allowing major impact on lives. Those who are coloured and once introduced to this, misconception will provide them with a trick thinking there countries are smaller than the white. People will believe that they are superior than others based on what size the country is and they will further on continue to say this till further generations which doesn’t support social equality.
Doll test
ReplyDelete1. In the video, all the children said that the white dolls were prettier, more smart, and better than the colored dolls. Even the coloured people chose the white doll against their own race. Media has reinforced this test in celebrity culture and fashion because most of the models and actresses are white and the coloured people are usually the ones in the advertisement that usually improves skin colour. For example, in its entire 118-year existence, Vogue has featured just 14 people of colour on its cover. The rest of them were white models, this just gives an insecurity for the coloured woman who too want to become someone. They show the white people more in society as the more good person and the black guy as a more bad person. For example, when watching shows you’ll see the good guy is white and is coming to the rescue of a crime and the black guy is usually the one who is doing a prison break or something that includes something bad.
2. How does the manufacturing industry reinforce the Clark Doll test results through dolls, toys and video games?
The manufacturing industry reinforce the doll results by usually choosing the whiter dolls. Even in video games the white people are usually portrayed as the good guys while the coloured people are portrayed as the bad guys. A lot of toys like dolls are usually designed to be made as the colour white. Nowadays, coloured dolls are cheaper than the white dolls.
4. How will your mother and grandmother feel if you got a strong tan or sunburn this summer? How does this affect your self-esteem and body image?
Personally, my mother wouldn’t really care on how i looked if i was either white or i got a tan. All, she would care about is how I am on the inside not on the outside. If I was really pretty and pale white on the outside, but I had unacceptable behaviour then my mom would find that wrong. It doesn’t affect my self-esteem or body image because personally I don’t care how I look, even though i am white and I’ve been told many times on how pale I was as a compliment I would thank them but wouldn’t take into much consideration on thinking that I’m maybe getting more attention or I am superior then the color people. It does not bring down my self-esteem or make me feel insecure about my body image.
Blue eyes vs. Brown eyes
ReplyDelete1. What did you learn from the "Blue eyes-Brown eyes" exercise?
I learned that sometimes blue eyed people are treated differently than brown eyed people. For example, first the blue-eyed thought they were better than the brown-eyed and they have more attention because of their unique feature and vice-versa. I learned that we sometimes judge people on how they look and that we don’t know how it feels when getting discriminated. Having different features makes us all equal in some way or the other.
2. Why do we treat people differently? Is this fair?
We treat people differently based on their colour, race, ethnicity, habits, etc. Just to feel superior or to feel that we deserve more rights or freedom than others we would treat others differently. Some people have separate classes in which to make some 'sense' of the world, or to feel a certain amount of control over their lives by making themselves out to be better than other people through these unjust significances which they have created. This is not fair because you can’t just judge or treat people based on what they look like or where they’re from. You have to understand that people may look different from the outside but on the inside they are the same as you and they deserve the same freedom and rights you deserve. We also get influenced by media and our surroundings like different stereotypes. For example, getting intimidated when seeing a balck guy. This is not fair because you can’t really make conclusions on how a person is based on how they look.
3. Describe a personal incident in which you were treated unfairly because of your skin colour. How did it make you feel? What do you wish you could have said or done differently in this situation?
In my old school, I was the only white person there and everybody else was Africans and they had a darker skin tone. Whenever we played a game the team captains would pick everyone and then the last person would be me. I would feel very left out in every way whether it would be group discussions or playing games. I would sometimes wish that I was darker toned. I wish that I could’ve spoken how we are both equal and how that you can’t just tell corner me out based on my skin tone.
4. I would ask a class to work in pairs and find a person that is not of your race or colour. I would ask them to hang out with each other and just have fun amongst themselves. Go out and walk together in the mall and just learn more about each other, things which you didn’t know. Then at the end tell each other how you felt in the beginning about each other then tell each other if they were not expecting this or they have a change of mind on what they thought about each other.

ReplyDelete1. How does the media reinforce the Clark Doll test results through fashion and celebrity culture?
Ans: the media uses white people most of the time and make them look prettier and nicer while the black people would always be the mean people.
2. How does the manufacturing industry reinforce the Clark Doll test results through dolls, toys and video games?
Ans: The companies make more white dolls and make them very attractive and gorgeous while they would not do the same to black dolls. For example, one child said that he likes the white doll better because it had prettier eyes.
3. How will your mother and grandmother feel if you got a strong tan or sunburn this summer? How does this affect your self-esteem and body image?
Ans: they would not really care as long as I won’t get hurt and it doesn’t turn red. My self-esteem won’t be hurt or be lowered because I don’t really care about what my skin color is.A

ReplyDelete1. Racism is the idea that each race has its own special characteristics and abilities, and these abilities are used to compare the inferiority and supremacy of a race on other races. White supremacy is the belief that white people are above people of all different races, specifically the black race, and because of their supremacy, should dominate society. Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
2. I think it does, because the map portrays the coloured countries as smaller, and the white countries as larger (by moving half of Asia to the opposite side of North and South America.) When children see larger objects, the larger object seems like it is better, has more power, and has more supremacy over smaller things. Also, with the placement of the map before, the location of the equator was through the United States, which is not true. The placement of the equator, allows for majority of the coloured countries to come below it. Also, by portraying that white countries are bigger, it is subconsciously saying that white countries have more power, and are able to take control of larger land masses, and coloured countries cannot do the same.
3. Yes, I do think that schools should change their maps. The map that students are taught with, portrays the untrue opinion that the white race is superior to other races. It shows students to value and appreciate the white race over other races, and to look down upon other races.
4. On the Mercator’s map, countries on the Northern hemisphere, containing white folks, have been drawn much, much larger than they actually are, and countries on the South hemisphere are drawn much smaller, in proportion. People unconsciously associate power and importance with size; the larger the object, the more important it must be, and the more power it must have. The Mercator’s map exaggerates the importance of white countries, and undervalues the importance of third-world countries. The Peter Projection map shows the world the way it is, with the land mass displayed in proportion, and the location of countries accurately displayed.

ReplyDelete1. The media influences the way people think, and young children are no exception to this. On the media, majority of the time, the celebrities you see, and the celebrities, are usually the white-skinned ones. It is the light-skinned models that get a lot of attention, and are most often used in advertisements. Beauty products are used to make skin tone lighter, and many products are said to give you a lighter skin colour, which makes the viewers automatically assume that white skin is the best skin. I’ve also noticed, that it doesn’t matter what the media is advertising, majority of the time, it will be a white person advertising, from diapers, to makeup, to cars. That also influences the way people view the entire idea of ‘beauty’. To be on television, a person needs to be physically beautiful. If majority of the people on television are white, and very, very few are of other skin colours (especially black), that is sending an unconscious message to our minds, telling us that to be ‘presentable looking’, or ‘beautiful’, you need to be white.
2. The manufacturing industry reinforces the Clark doll test, through dolls, toys, and video games by the following ways: Dolls used to be only white. There were no black dolls manufactured, at all. Nowadays, black dolls are also being made, but not before. The white dolls were made, and white dolls were advertised, for quite a long period of time. Nowadays, even though both black and white dolls are being made, it’s usually the white dolls that are advertised. When toys are being advertised, they are shown being played by white children. It is the white child that always plays with the toys. It is white people that play with trucks, it is white people that play with dolls, and seldom is a black child shown, playing with those toys. This gives the impression that toys are created for the white children, when in reality, black children can use the toys too, and they do. In video games, majority of the characters that are in them, are light skinned, again, giving the impression that white people are the only kind of people that look good enough, doing anything the intended character is intended to do, and only white people have the ability to do cool stunts in video games.
3. If I got a strong tan, or a sunburn over the summer, my mother or grandmother would be very upset as to why. They would lecture me about trying to eat these foods, stay away from the sun, and do other things, in order to achieve a lighter complexion. They would try to push me into trying to become lighter. This would impact my self-esteem greatly. It would make me feel, as if, I am worth nothing but the colour I am. I have no intellect that is useful, I have no talent that is worth anything, but if I have a white skin tone, then I am successful in the way I look. It would make me feel like I have to appear a certain way, for the satisfaction of other people, and that I am not allowed to feel comfortable in my own skin, until I have reached society’s impending standards of beauty. It would make me resent myself, and would build a lot of avoidable insecurities about my skin, inside of me.

ReplyDelete1. I learned that, the children with the colour of eyes perceived as bad, they were less enthusiastic, they were picked on, and they did not perform as well in class as they could have, because they had a drop in their self-esteem. I also learned that people are easily influenced by what they are told. In a time-span of 15 minutes, caring children became vicious, all because of classification due to eye colour.
2. We treat people differently, based on their skin colour. If there is a white person and a black person, most people would respect the white person, simply because he is white, and think negatively about the black person, simply because he is black. This is not fair at all, because the colour of a person’s skin has nothing to do with their individuality as a human being. Just because a person is white, it doesn’t mean that they will always be smart, and a black person will not always be dumb. Skin colour is exterior, and it doesn’t determine factors of a person’s intelligence, character, and personality, let alone classify an entire race of people.
3. In my family, I am the darkest-skinned child. Because of this, my family finds it amusing to poke fun at my skin colour, and my darker complexion. This one time, I remember, I was sitting with my mother and sister, and I was asking my mother about details of all of my siblings and myself, when we were born. I was asking how much we weighed, our height, and my sister asked about our skin tones. I was born with the darkest complexion, I found out. My sister then decided to hold onto that piece of information, to tease me. When we found out, she stared at me, and started teasing me about how I was really dark. I retorted by stating she was born the heaviest out of us all. This experience made me realize that people are vicious (including myself). It eluded to the fact that people generally believe that being dark skinned is not considered beautiful. My sister considered herself superior because she was whiter, and I believed her to be right. I felt downright furious at her, and I wanted her to feel what I felt, hence the comment about her weight. I wish I hadn’t responded in that way, but instead, I wish I took being a darker colour as compliment. It was when I considered it an insult that I was affected by it.
4. In my family, I can conduct a social experiment tampering with the bmi range: Any person with a bmi above 25, is considered dumb, and worse than anyone with a bmi lower than 25. With conducting this experiment with my family (because they are into scientific facts), I can create an online scientific study that proves that people with a bmi over 25 are worse than people with a bmi less than 25. I could show this study to my family, and constantly remind them of this fact. Overtime, it would wear down on them, and lead them to believe themselves as dumb, or worth less, which is certainly not the case.
For my classmates, I could do: anyone over 5’3 is better than anyone smaller than 5’3. For this, I could just make a PSA to my class, and have them discuss it among one another. This would induce negative views about the more petite students in the class, causing them to think negatively about themselves. This would also cause the taller students to think of themselves as more superior, giving themselves undeserved self-importance.

ReplyDelete1. What did you learn from the "Blue eyes-Brown eyes" exercise?
Ans. I learnt that the children at such a young age already understand what racism and they don’t know how it feels to be treated the black people are treated. This experiment helps them understand.
2. Why do we treat people differently? Is this fair?
Ans: Just because they are of a different race doesn’t mean that we treat them differently. It is not fair to them, this way they end up hating others or themselves and they are not even given a chance to express themselves. If humans had equal rights then that means that colored people are not humans. We have to give them the honor and respect they deserve.
3. Describe a personal incident in which you were treated unfairly because of your skin colour. How did it make you feel? What do you wish you could have said or done differently in this situation?
Ans: In Uk, I got asked a lot of questions about how my lifestyle was as an asian and particularly as a muslim. I told them we weren’t aliens and that we were humans too and we did what everyone humans do. We respected others and cared for them but there are those who are different but that doesn’t mean everyone is.
4. Design a social experiment you can conduct on your family and/or classmates to help reduce racism. Share the outline of your experiment.
Ans: I could gather all my small cousins and younger family members and ask them specific questions related to different races and later on explain whether what they thought would be hurtful to others or not.

ReplyDelete1. Define the words: racism, white supremacy, imperialism and racism.
Racism: a person who believes that a particular race is more superior or important to another race. In other words discrimination.
White supremacy: a person who believes that white people are superior than any other colored races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society.
Imperialism: a policy of gaining a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
2. Do you think that the map (one described in the video) promotes white supremacy, imperialism and racism?
Yes I do think the clearly promotes white supremacy, racism and imperialism because of how large they made the countries shown in the map indicating the larger countries (white countries) are more superior than the smaller countries (coloured races). Just like the saying the bigger the better. This promotes racism and white supremacy because they made the American and European countries larger in size than countries like India, Pakistan, Africa etc. to show how more important the white countries are. This also shows imperialism because the bigger the white countries are, it how their more power than country gains because of the land mass.
3. After watching the video, do you feel that schools need to change their maps?
In my opinion I do feel that schools need to change their maps because the map is clearly wrong and it just tells lies to the students. I didn’t know that Greenland was actually smaller than South America and a lot of people may not know as well. The students should be told the truth especially to students that cooperate more with visual learning. When they see the size of the “white” countries, there bound to have those thoughts that those countries are definitely more rich and important.
4. What do map projections of the size of majority "black"/"brown" countries vs. "white" countries have to do with social equality?
The map projection does have a lot to do with social equality because the larger the countries are, they are shown to be more important, strong and powerful. Basically the larger countries gain more control and power over the smaller colored race countries

ReplyDelete1. The media corrupts the children and the viewers into thinking that the white dolls are more attractive and smart than black dolls because the media usually represents white dolls as the star or main character. In the video most of the children said that the white dolls are prettier and smarter and the black dolls are more mean and scary because their black and not “pretty”. They also mentioned how safe they feel with white dolls and how dangerous they fell with black dolls. This makes the children grow up to be more racist because of the things they watch in the media.
2. The manufacturing industries also corrupts the children into thinking white dolls are prettier than black dolls because of how little they incorporate black dolls. The most popular brands are all white dolls for example Barbie. This concept not only makes the children racist but also very narrow minded thinking that only white consists of beauty and popularity and it can bring a colored children’s feeling down and corrupt their self-esteem.
3. My mother wouldn’t really care because she is not the racist type, I guess because comes from a racist area she tends to get bothered that your face is slightly darker than the res t of your body, but she wouldn’t make a big deal out of it. I’m not all too close with my grandmother but I know that she comes again from a very anrrow minded racist area and since she’s older than both me and my mom she was probably taught and raised differently than us.

Blue eyes V.S Brown eyes
ReplyDelete1. I learned that people tends to believe in stereotypes just because they never really experienced it themselves and never really cared because it doesn’t matter to them, but as soon as their put in that person’s shoes they can see the truth of how that person who holds the stereotypes feels. I also learned that the children at the begging were very narrow-minded and racist towards the black children even though there was no valid reason as to why the black children were looked down upon. So when the teacher made the blue eyes and brown eyes separate, the first day the blue eyes were treated special and kids who used to smile and laugh were very depressed and gloomy, they thought it was unfair. Same thing happened when the situation switched to brown eyes, they really despised that day of school they felt as if there were locked up in prison.
2. A lot of the time we tend to treat other people differently because of their race just like how a white person would treat only another white person as their equal but most of the time I think we treat other differently because we don’t know much about them and that where the stereotypes and judgement comes in. If we don’t know much about someone we often categorize them with race and the way they behave and come to a decision to either socialize to them or ignore. When we know someone or at least know that they are the same race as you, people tend to feel more comfortable they think at least you have one thing in common. And no this isn’t fair, we can’t just judge someone just because we don’t know them.
3. I never really had an incident where someone would insult me in a racist way and I would get offended but I remember in public school, people would often make curry and jokes and assume I eat them even for breakfast just because I’m brown.
4. I would make my racist friend wear a blind fold and talk to this person whom she thinks is the same race as her but has the same interests of thing my friend likes. They will socialize and then ill take the blindfold off to show the hold time my friend was talking to the person of a race who make friend isn’t fond of
